Nutrisystem has a section for members where they can get tips on weight loss as well as inspirational stories and share recipes. The way this section of the site is currently designed a photo is required for each recipe, with most of the recipes coming from members. Since members don’t always include a photo of the recipe they submit Nutrisystem’s current policy is that if a recipe is submitted without a photo someone will go through and see if something can be found in stock photography. The issue is, because many of the recipes are variations on existing Nutrisystem foods, it’s often difficult to find a photo that reasonably matches what the recipe calls for.
I was asked to create a series of placeholder images that mirrored the Nutrisystem plan. There would be a placeholder for each of meal categories: breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. The creative team chose a birds eye view of foods fitting each of the categories from a series of sketches.
Both a thumbnail image that was used on the main page as well as a larger featured image were required. After illustrating the larger featured image I took many of the vector elements I created and simplified them so they would work better at the tiny size of the thumbnail.
Please feel free to read more about my illustration process in my blog post, Nutrisystem Placeholder Images.
