Welcome to 2013, may it be the best year ever!!
This year I’m planning on spending more time working on my vector illustrations. The plan is to do one a week, and no other “clever” drawings on post-it’s and what not. Of course I do reserve the right to post more or less in a week depending on how detailed my drawings are. I’m not the best at coming up with ideas, so I’d image some weeks will be more like a vector doodle, while other weeks I end up creating something with a larger scope than I anticipated.
I knew I wanted to do something for new years day to kick off the year, but I wasn’t sure exactly what. In fact I was working on another illustration at the time, which I abandoned, when the idea of a champagne cork aviator got my creative juiced flowing.
First up I did a little post-it note sketch. I’m still not loving the iPad for a sketch medium. I’m not ready to give it up just yet, but I’m also not going to let the fact that I hate drawing on it keep me from working on a project. I also wanted to do some custom lettering for 2013 and after drawing up some iterations on scrap paper I had a concept.
At first I was going to draw the 2013 champagne in a long horizontal layout, but because of the scale my champagne aviator was too tiny and that was just unacceptable. So I upended the bottle and made some adjustments to the numbers and viola! A champagne aviator direct to your door for New Years day.
And for an extra bit of fun you can watch me turn scraps of doodles into a fun flight, complete with bottle service.
