Following hot on the heals of last week’s homage to The Shining, The Overlook Hotel Travel Poster, I decided that I wanted to do a series of postcards for the Overlook Hotel too. This week I bring you the Colorado Lounge.
In case you don’t remember, the Colorado Lounge was the place where Jack was frantically working away on his novel. I wanted to do a few things with the Colorado Lounge. One thing was to make it warm and inviting, especially in contrast with the weather outside. If you remember the movie the room was cold and bright. I wanted to contrast that; a postcard should make you want to be there. At the same time I still wanted to give it an ominous undertone. The kind of thing where if you looked at the postcard you’d want to visit, but if you knew the movie, weeeell… not so much. I wanted the overall feel to be relaxing in a ski lodge, with a Shining twist.
So it’s a more relaxed Jack than what we see in the book or movie, maybe the moment just before he becomes an obsessive psychopath. He’s not smiling and cheesy, but he’s still seems to be a normal guy. He enjoying a drink, which we all know is just bad news. Especially in a hotel where there’s no liqueur during the winter months.
The last bit to add was the copy. It’s not quite right, but it’s almost there. If you have any suggestions on how to make it better, I’d welcome them. I’m just missing coming up with something perfect, but not sure what it is.
Stay tuned, for the next two weeks I’m going to be finishing up my The Shining series. I have two more postcards in mind, and then I think I’m going to get prints made and see if I can’t sell a couple of sets. Wouldn’t it be so much fun to send a postcard from the Overlook?
